Susan Folwell L.C.S.W.

susan folwellSusan Folwell, LCSW is a board-certified psychotherapist and consultant in private practice, licensed in Virginia and Washington DC, where she works with adults, young adults, and older adolescents. With over 25 years of experience, Susan’s career has been devoted to making a difference in the field of interpersonal violence and abuse, trauma, stalking, high conflict separation, divorce and custody. She works with individuals and groups who are experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety and complex trauma. In addition to her clinical work with individuals, she places a special emphasis on working with professionals (therapists, attorneys, and clergy) to understand and manage the effects of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma in their work and personal lives.

Susan provides supervision and field instruction for Masters level students and graduate clinicians who are working towards licensure.  She provides national and international training, having served on a panel of experts to develop curriculum and provide on-sight training for Afghanistan domestic violence shelters. Ms. Folwell sits on a number of mental health task forces, is a member of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, holds an appointment on Fairfax County’s domestic violence fatality review team, and sits on the advisory board for the County’s supervised visitation and exchange program. She also is Campbell Danger Assessment certified, and provides specialized safety planning for clients who are in dangerous or violent relationships.

Previously, Susan worked for over 7 years with The Women’s Center in Vienna, Va. There, she was a staff psychotherapist and the domestic violence program manager, and also served as the Center’s spokesperson for domestic violence-related issues.

Her experience, humor and compassion provide a keen understanding of the unique challenges her clients face. Susan’s therapeutic philosophy is collaborative, so that sessions become a safe haven in which to explore options, gain clarity and insight, and embark on the journey towards wholeness.
